This is a tourist thing to do while in Hawaii. The pearls harvested are not from here, they are freshwater farmed from Japan. While visiting tourist places with family a while back, I let Rylan have a try at it, so he could see where pearls come from first hand, and not just read about it in a book.

Afterwards they clean them with salt water and a cloth and they are given to you gleaming.
